Electric Bike Battery Safety Tips

Helpful safety tips for anyone that owns an electric bike or has to charge an electric bike’s battery.

Types of Battery

Most e-bikes today use a type of battery know as Lithium-ion. These batteries are able to charge fairly quickly and hold a charge for several hours. Lithium-ion battery usage has exploded in the e-bike industry and although popular, misuse of these batteries can have terrible consequences. It is very important to know and understand what not to do when handling these batteries.

Lithium-ion Batteries: Usage

Lithium-ion batteries are used in e-bikes, cellphones, vape cigars, toys, power tools and various other electronic devices. Their usage has increased in popularity due to its “energy density.” This allows for the battery to be capable of storing large amounts of energy in a much smaller space. Due to the demand, this type of battery usage will only increase over time. Charging Your E-Bike’s Battery

Lithium-ion batteries are great for everyday life and their value cannot be overstated. However, safe charging practices are to be used to ensure your safety and that of others. Failure to adopt safe charging practices may lead to destruction due to uncontrollable fires and loss of life.

One of the most important steps to take is to not leave your battery charging unattended, especially overnight – never leave it charging while you sleep. These batteries can overheat, catch on fire and fire extinguishers or water due not work on fires caused by Lithium-ion batteries.

It is also important to not interchange battery chargers. Make sure to use the charger that your e-bike came with. If it is malfunctioning, take the necessary steps to replace it with the same model type or ensuring that your new charger is 100% compatible with your type of battery. Using a charger that is not compatible can cause the battery to overheat and a fire can result. Also, only use devices that are tested by a reputable testing agency such as UL. For more useful information please check the National Fire Protection Association.

Precautions

If you notice that your battery is overheating, looks discolored, changes shape, produces a strange odor, emits strange noises, or leaks, stop it from charging immediately. If safe to do so, take it to safe place where there’s nothing that can catch fire and call 911.

Safe Storage

Always ensure that you store your e-bike battery in a cool dry place. Never expose your battery to a heat source such as direct sunlight or other heating sources.
